In this podcast, Brion and Elizabeth join Courtney to discuss the history of homeopathy in the US. Homeopathy first arrived in the early 1800’s, and by the mid-19th century, homeopathy had established a significant presence, particularly in cities like New York and Philadelphia. Dr. Constantine Hering, often referred to as the “Father of American Homeopathy,” founded the American Institute for Homeopathy in 1844. He advocated for the recognition and acceptance of homeopathy within the medical community. By 1900, there were more than 100 homeopathic hospitals, solidifying homeopathy’s status as a legitimate medical practice in the US.
However, the rise of homeopathy threatened conventional medicine. The effectiveness of homeopathy coupled with its gentle approach made it a popular choice for those who experienced the crude and dangerous practices of allopathic medicine of the time (leeches, bloodletting, Mercury poisoning, etc). The decline in interest in conventional medicine led to the formation of the American Medical Association (AMA) who felt threatened by homeopathy’s growth and sought to undermine its success through various efforts.
Our discussion highlights homeopathy’s golden days in the early 1900’s, as well as its fall—when at the hands of the Flexner Report, homeopathy (and other natural healing modalities) were systematically dismantled. The 1960’s and 70’s saw a resurgence of homeopathy in-part due to dissatisfaction with conventional medical practices and a shift in consciousness.
Where are we now? Is homeopathy on a rise or is it still being smothered by a system of medicine that seeks to suppress alternative health care options? Did the pandemic further stifle homeopathy with over-reaching bans on health freedoms and attempts to choke out non-allopathic options through censorship and “fact-checking?” Or did these measures simply create yet another resurgence of interest in homeopathy and other natural modalities? Listen in to hear what Brion and Elizabeth think about the future of homeopathy in our full podcast.
In our research for this podcast, we stumbled upon a phenomenal music video covering the History of homeopathy in America called “Homeo Pie” by Robert Cassard that’s definitely worth a listen.
